Bright Eyes V -Orange and White Tabby Cat

While all cats' eyes are beautiful, Janet Wissmann is partial to the green ones. In this painting the artist concentrated on using only two basic colors: orange and green. Paintings that use a very limited palette such as this can be quite compelling.
Janet writes, "In this painting I did use a bit of white for the highlight in the eyes and for a few of the cat's left whiskers, but believe it or not the cat's right whiskers are simply the white of the watercolor paper. (Click on image to see extreme details.) I managed this by using a bit of
liquid mask before painting. This allowed me to keep the background plane intact, allowing the suspended paint particles do their marvelous melding behind the whiskers as only transparent watercolours can do. After the paint was dry, I removed the mask. Then, near the end, I toned down the comparatively bright white a bit by placing a dilute wash or two over the whiskers.

To say that this painting depicts a happy cat is an understatement!
Janet writes, "Years ago a veterinarian told me that cats have many more muscles in their faces than dogs do--and so they are capable of many more subtle facial expressions than dogs. I don't know how true that is, but I can say that cats are more difficult to paint than dogs! When I am painting, one slight paint stroke here or there can significantly change the appearance of a cat's expression." Smiley Cat is framed with 100% acid-free rag mats, satin pewter frame, and real feathers from a Blue and Gold Macaw and a pheasant. Frame size is 13x19 inches; image 5x8 inches. The top mat color proved very difficult to photograph; it's a gray-green, pewter colored mat, more accurately like the detail picture below. Inner mat is olive. If you don't like this matting, I'll be happy to cut new mats (a plain off-white double mat), for no charge, as long as I still have enough materials here.

Bright Eyes II -Siamese Cat
Bright Eyes II -Original Watercolor Painting
A gorgeous blue-eyed Seal Point Siamese (of the old type, ca. 1970) graces this original watercolor cat painting. Surrounded by real feathers and matted with Moka and Cinnamon suede rag mats, Bright Eyes II displays in a very rich manner the tawny and chocolate browns prevalent in this breed of cat. The Seal Point's velvety ecru fur has an added bluish or lilac component as well. Janet writes, "This color is difficult to record on film, so I had to rely on my memory when painting this original watercolor. A touch of cerulean blue in the background helps to lead the viewer's eye in the direction of the cat's own intense gaze." Click on the pictures to view this original at its absolute best. On the Barn Door Original Watercolor Painting - SOLD
When a client commissions Janet to paint a watercolor portrait of his or her horse, the artist's first step is to go to the horse-boarding facility to take her own photographs. All the horse barns have a complement of dogs and cats roaming about. Everyone has their job; the cats are there to eat the mice, and the dogs are there to greet visitors. On the morning of Janet's visit, Tiki (who was actually a calico) was effortlessly balanced on a three-inch wide barn door where she was working very, very hard at doing what cats do best: dozing in the sun. The artist took one look at her emerald green eyes rimmed with black eyeliner and her quizzical expression and just knew she'd have to paint her.
On the Barn Door is a fairly monochromatic painting. Janet chose to limit the palette to bright and cheerful hues of yellow ochre and burnt sienna, with a bit of cerulean blue tucked in here and there in the shadows and white areas. It's painted in a looser style than many of her animal portraits. Image size: 9.5 x 11" Matted size: 16 x 20". Click pictures to see details.
